BARP lowers the age required for membership

December 8, 2021

A local organization catering mainly to retirees has lowered the age requirement for membership.

People 40 years and over can now join the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP).

President, Marilyn Rice-Bowen, says this was among a number of changes to the organisation’s constitution.

She justified why the decision was taken, by explaining that concerns about many people being unable to adequately plan for retirement have led to the resolution within the BARP lowering its joining age.

Mrs Rice-Bowen told the Morning Report that they changed the constitution on Monday to allow individuals to join from 40 years instead of 50 because when many join at fifty plus they are not financially prepared.

She stressed that the intergenerational mix will help strengthen the relationship between seniors and younger Barbadians.
