Food price increases could affect the tourism sector

August 12th, 2021

The possible increase in cost for poultry and other consumer products could have an impact on the island’s bread and butter sector, tourism. That is, unless creative solutions are found for the problem.

This assessment from Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Geoffrey Roach during a wide ranging press conference this morning.

The notion that poultry prices could rise stems from an increase in the cost of feed, a key component of the poultry industry.

Mr. Roach notes the basic inputs to the sector’s operations like food and shipping costs are all seeing continued increases in prices.

While he agrees that price competitiveness is an important issue, BHTA Chairman, Senator Rudy Grant also thinks tourism players have to ensure they enhance the value of their product.
