Australia has become the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 after beating South Africa by six wickets and with 21 balls to spare.

The victory was wrapped up by their powerful middle order, with Tahlia McGrath smashing a brilliant 57 from 33 balls, Ash Gardner finishing unbeaten on 28 and Grace Harris hitting the winning runs to the boundary off the first ball she faced as they chased down the target of 125.

South Africa Women had put 124 for six on the board batting their 20 overs first, led by Tazmin Brits’ knock of 45.

Meanwhile, England kept their place at the top of Group 2 with a vital 11-run win over India at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s half-century led England’s recovery as they posted 151 for seven despite seamer Renuka Thakur’s five for 15.

In reply, opener Smriti Mandhana looked to be steering India to victory before she was crucially dismissed by Sarah Glenn for 52 with 47 runs still needed.

Richa Ghosh led a fightback with an unbeaten 47, but with 31 needed from the final over, India finished on 140 for five.

Meanwhile, the West Indies Women have a crucial game tomorrow against Pakistan. They must beat Pakistan by a large margin in their final group game to improve their net run-rate.

They will also need England or India to lose both of their remaining games to have any chance of qualifying in second place.

That match for the Windies Women begins at 9:00 a.m.
