A local community farming group is researching new ways of growing crops without the use of harmful pesticides.
The eight member group, known as the Baird's Village Aquaponics Association, is doing so using a fully solar-powered, off-grid system.
Farmer Damian Hinkson says the group is currently trying different crops including citrus fruits and herbs.
The group has received more than US$50 thousand in funding from the global environment facility small grants programme which is implemented by the UNDP.
National coordinator David Bynoe says the project's use of renewable technologies makes it very appropriate for small island developing states like Barbados.
