Suriname police are investigating an incident in which a man shot his brother believing him to be a burglar stealing his chickens on Tuesday night.
Police have not released the names of those involved but they said they went to an address in the Uitvlugt neighbourhood on the outskirts of the capital, after receiving a report about the incident.
The residents said that the victim was caught red-handed by the owner of the house while stealing chickens.
The man is believed to have fired two shots at the burglar and only realised that he had shot and killed his own relative when another brother found the lifeless body of the 45-year old man near the fence in front of the yard. A bag with two chickens was found nearby.
Police said that the victim was well-known to them as a petty criminal and in the past the two brothers had made several reports regarding the theft of their chickens.
