One day after receiving a Barbados Companion of Honour award for his contribution to the field of optometry, esteemed optometrist Harold Keith Melville has died.

Melville had been ailing for some time and was represented by his grandson Alexander McCall during the ceremony at Government House on Tuesday.

After completing his doctorate in optometry at the Philadelphia Optical College in 1953, he returned to Barbados to continue the practice founded by his late grandfather, Harcourt Carter.

He dedicated more than fifty years to Harcourt Carter Optical before retiring only last year.

Mr. Melville was also responsible for opening the Sunbury Great House and was Chairman of the Board of Directors up until 2015.

In 2000, he was awarded the Barbados Companion of Honour for his contribution to tourism.

He leaves to mourn three daughters, and his wife Angela Melville.
