A Canadian visitor was fined $80 thousand dollars by the courts after he was caught trying to smuggle drugs into Barbados.

Police say customs officials found cannabis in fifty-eight vacuum sealed plastic bags hidden in a paddle board belonging to Michael Dwight Sylvester.

The 24-year-old was arrested and charged with possession, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation of the drug.

Sylvester appeared before Magistrate Laurie Ann Smith-Bovell in the District B Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offences.

He was fined for the trafficking offence but convicted, reprimanded and discharged on all the others.

His lawyer paid the fine.
