Amazon Warriors adds firepower in shape of Pooran

Guyana Amazon Warriors have signed West Indies left-hander Nicholas Pooran as their marquee player for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League season, as they bid to lift their maiden title.

The 23-year-old Pooran is one of the young rising stars in the Twenty20 arena, having played 11 times for West Indies and scored two half-centuries.

“Nicholas is amongst the very best T20 batting talents in the world and we wanted to bring him into our team as we push to go one better than last year where we finished as runners-up,” said Amazon Warriors team operations manager, Omar Khan.

“He is explosive and exciting, and we are very pleased to be able to have such an impressive young talent representing the Guyana Amazon Warriors this year.”

Last year, Pooran scored 267 runs at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 144 to be one of the bright sparks for Barbados Tridents who finished bottom of the standings.

An aggressive batsman who boasts an array of audacious strokes, Pooran could find himself paired with the likes of fellow stroke-makers Shimron Hetmyer and Chadwick Walton for the tournament which runs from September 4 to October 12.

Player lineups will be finalised later this month when the draft comes off on May 22 in London.

Amazon Warriors were good enough to reach the final last season before losing to defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders.
