Husbands cruises in second leg of Triple Tiara

Veteran rider Patrick Husbands landed his biggest win of the new Woodbine season when he produced a stalking ride aboard 5-2 choice Speedy Soul to win the CAN$225 000 Bison City Stakes Sunday.

Going a mile and sixteenth in the second leg of Canada’s Triple Tiara, Husbands produced a sterling stretch rally aboard the Mark Casse-trained filly to trounce the seven-horse field by 3-¼ lengths in a time of one minute, 44:51 seconds.

The victory was Husbands’ fifth in the prestigious event, his previous victories having come with Touchnow in 2004, Kimchi in 2006, Sealy Hill one year later before winning with Enstone in 2017.

“She wants to run all day. Last time when I rode her, [in the] the first quarter, I couldn’t get her to relax,” Husbands said afterwards.

“I begged Mark and [owner] Joey [Guerrieri], ‘can you please take the blinkers off?’ Today, from the time she left the gate, she was relaxed and it was only a matter of time.

“When I asked her to go and she straightened up and I gave her the first lash she just went on.”

Favourite Bold Script and Intanga Rose produced the early splits of 24.90 seconds for the quarter and 49.47 for the half, with Speedy Soul partnered by Canadian Magic stalking from second.

The early pace-setters led the field off the final turn with Husbands setting Speedy Soul down for the drive three wide. Inside the final furlong, Speedy Soul proved full of running, breezing by the leaders to take the wire strongly.

The first leg of the Triple Tiara – the Woodbine Oaks – was staged earlier this month while the final leg – the $225 000 Wonder Where Stakes – is set for August 10.
