Residents of the illegal housing settlement in Rock Hall, St. Philip are to be relocated.
Word of this from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, during yesterday’s post-cabinet media briefing.
Prime Minister Mottley says back in 2007, there were 96 unauthorized structures on the land, but that number had significantly increased over the past decade.
She believes this is of particular concern not only because of the development’s close proximity to the airport but because the area was once home to a landfill.
The Prime Minister says households earning less than 15 thousand dollars per year will be provided with 25 thousand dollar grants to assist in their relocation.
Prime Minister Mottley says the Ministry of housing in conjunction with the Ministry of Welfare will be conducting a social survey to gather as much information on residents as possible.
She says this will be followed by discussions with the residents both on an individual and collective basis.
The Prime Minister says government will also be moving to address issues of overcrowding in a number of communities.
