Time to encourage recycling via act

A local businessman is again calling on government to expand the Returnable Containers Act to encourage Barbadians to recycle more.

Managing Director of B’s Recycling, Paul Bynoe, says the act in its current form only makes provision for certain types of plastic bottles and aluminum cans to be returned for money.

Given Barbados’ limited landfill space, Mr. Bynoe believes if Barbadians are encouraged to return more items, it would not only reduce the pressure on the landfill but create opportunities to earn foreign exchange by selling the recycled materials to overseas buyers.

Mr. Bynoe also believes it’s time Barbados follows the example of international cities and begins sorting garbage at source.
