Barbados wants a change in the development model in a way that allows for the Caribbean to bounce back in the aftermath of hazard events.
Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson made the call as he addressed the opening of the 11th Caribbean conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management in Dutch Sint Maarten.
The theme for this year’s conference is “The Road to Resilience Checkpoint 2019: Safeguarding our Communities, Livelihoods, and Economies”.
Mr Hinkson revealed that since the 1950s, the Caribbean has been hit by hundreds of disasters.
He says small island states must be fearless on issues of importance to their survival.
