IDB’s High-Level Meeting In Barbados This Week

Approximately 100 regional policymakers from a number of Caribbean countries are expected to gather here for a high-level two-day meeting being hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Inclusive Caribbean is the theme of the IX Annual Consultation of Caribbean Governors meeting, to be held on February 6 and 7, at the Hilton Barbados Resort. The IDB’s Governors are ultimately responsible for overseeing the Bank’s activities and administration.

For the Caribbean region, the governors are prime ministers or senior members of Cabinet from The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

This two-day consultation is in keeping with the IDB’s thrust to promote sustainable and inclusive growth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Some of the sessions will focus on creating the foundations for inclusive growth; making education the “great equalizer” in the Caribbean; how financial inclusion can improve productivity and getting the most out of existing sectors, such as tourism.

The annual consultation, which began as a prelude to the IDB’s annual general meeting, has evolved into an opportunity for governors, the President of the Caribbean Development Bank and senior executives of the IDB to explore solutions to pressing issues facing the region.

The governors are expected to consider new perspectives, experiences, and technologies to solve problems during interactive sessions with regional and international experts.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno are expected to deliver remarks during the official opening ceremony on Thursday, February 6. They will also be part of the conversation on the role and relevance of the IDB Group in the new decade.
