Commerce minister Dwight Sutherland believes the time will come for the return of a local bank on the island.
But he has made it clear that government should not necessarily be looking to get involved.
Mr. Sutherland was speaking during a thanksgiving service to mark the 45th anniversary of the St. Leonard’s cooperative credit union limited at the St. Leonard’s church over the weekend.
He says he is proud of the steady movement of the credit union movement which has now grown to 33 credit unions over the years.
But he continues to be critical of what he says are ridiculous fees being charged by commercial banks.
