Barbadian Saffie Joseph saddled a single winner at Gulfstream Park on Sunday but it was enough to keep tabs on leader Todd Pletcher at the top of the trainer standings.
Joseph put out favourite More Than Usual who stunned the three-year-old and upward maidens by a whopping 7-¼ lengths to win the US$17 000 race four over a mile.
The victory carried the 33-year-old Joseph to 13 wins from 58 outings this season, and winnings of $250 000.
He is now just two behind Pletcher whose three winners earlier in the weekend catapulted him to the top of the standings on 15 wins.
Under jockey Tyler Gaffalione on a wet track, More Than Usual stalked early leader Khattaf from second, as the 5-1 choice pulled the field through splits of 23.28 seconds for the quarter and 46.05 for the half-mile.
Gran Champagne, Makinalegacy and Mia’s Extortionist all battled in a group as they dragged the rest of the field with them down the backstretch.
Gaffalione then moved More Than Usual up to challenge the leader at the three-eighths pole, producing a burst of speed that sent the three-year-old colt to the front and four lengths clear at the top of the stretch.
The race was over as a contest in the lane as Gaffalione pulled More Than Usual away to reach the wire without a challenger in sight.
The Gulfstream Park season runs from April 2 to September 27.
