Joseph widens gap in second with single winner

Barbadian Saffie Joseph Jr added another win to his tally for the summer meet at Gulfstream Park, to strengthen his hold on second place in the trainers’ standings.

The 33-year-old sent out 5-1 choice Gibberish in the US$45 000 race four and watched as the three-year-old dark bay destroyed the three-year-old and upward maiden fillies and mares by seven lengths.

Joseph now has 19 wins for the season, two behind leader Todd Pletcher, with Michael Maker four back on 15.

Going a mile in near torrential rain that made visibility difficult, jockey Emisael Jaramillo stalked from second with Gibberish as 7-5 bet Assume led early before 13-1 chance Lasting Union took command.

With three furlongs to run, Gibberish snatched the lead with Assume chasing and favourite Prairie Wings coming into contention.

In the stretch, Jaramillo carried Gibberish with a strong run down the middle of the track to reach the wire handsomely in a time of one minute, 37.36 seconds.

Prairie Wings trailed in second while Assume edged Lasting Union by a neck for third place.

Meanwhile, Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh also found success in the final event of the 12-race card, steering 3-1 bet Free to Fly to a narrow win by a neck over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares going a mile.
