Prime Minister calls for debt relief

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley continued to bat for Small Island Developing states calling for emergency fiscal measures, including debt relief to avert another potential crisis.

The call came during her address via video conference at extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, OACPS.

According to her, SIDS have been suffering from high debt and low growth for decades and there is need for mature conversations with respect to debt obligations in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ms Mottley told the OACPS, formerly the ACP Group of States, the multilateral system cannot be allowed to die as the global threats and crises all require multilateral collaboration, commitment and responses.

The Barbadian leader says the interdependence of the world has been magnified with the onset of the Covid-19.

Given the global connectedness, she says the recovery of one country is linked to another.

Ms Mottley again pressed for a revision of the vulnerability index for countries in the region.
