Debate continued well into the night as senators dissected and discussed the Severance Payment Amendment Bill 2020.
Leader of Government Business and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Jerome Walcott says there’s a view among some, that the Act is sacrosanct and shouldn’t be interfered with.
But with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects, he suggests the current circumstances warrant its amendment.
The amendment extends the period in which employers are required to pay severance.
Dr Walcott acknowledged it is difficult times but says government wants the private sector to have some breathing space which will enable them to continue operations and provide employment.
