Play abandoned due to persistent rain

Persistent rain has forced the abandonment of the opening day of the first Test on Wednesday.

On a day of frustrating stoppages at the Ageas Bowl, the last of the three rain breaks came at 4:27 pm and players never returned.

Overall, only 17.4 overs in 82 minutes of play were possible, with England reaching 35 for one after choosing to bat first.

Left-handed opener Rory Burns was unbeaten on 20 and was partnered by Joe Denly on 14.

Dom Sibley was the only casualty, bowled off stump offering no stroke to speedster Shannon Gabriel in the day’s second over without a run on the board.
