Holder now in number two spot

West Indies captain Jason Holder has moved up a place to the number-two spot in the ICC test rankings for bowlers.

Holder, who is also the number-one-ranked test all-rounder in the world, took match figures of seven wickets for 91 runs in the first test against England which the Windies won by four wickets.

Holder’s six for 42 in the first innings against England at the Ageas stadium in Southampton, helped restrict the home side to 204 on day two.

The performance that included one for 49 in England’s second innings, earned the lanky medium pacer 32 points in the test rankings taking him to 862 points.

Those points also moved him ahead of New Zealand’s Neil Wagner who has 843.

Australia’s Pat Cummings leads the rankings with 904 points.

Kemar Roach, who went wicket-less in the match is ranked 16th with 731 points while man-of-the-match Shannon Gabriel is ranked 18th with 726 points.

Meanwhile, West Indies’ hard fought win over England has now put Holder at the joint third spot in the list of most successful West Indies captains with eleven wins from his 33 tests.

Sir Clive Lloyd has won 36 matches and lost 12 out of the 74 tests he captained the Windies, and remains the most successful captain in terms of matches won.

Sir Vivian Richards, who won 27 and lost 8 of the 50 tests, is placed second although his win percentage is higher than Sir Clive’s and second only to the legendary captain Sir Frank Worrell.

Sir Richie Richardson is placed third with 11 wins from 24 tests, but he is not alone on the third spot anymore, as Holder in now tied on that with 11.

The victory has taken Holder ahead of Brian Lara, who won just 10 of the 47 test matches he captained.

Another achievement for this West Indies team was keeping a great chasing record intact.

Chasing 200 runs for victory at Southampton, this was the 61st time they were chasing 200 or less in the fourth innings.

The victory keeps that record intact as they have now won 55 times and have drawn 6 times while chasing 200 or less.
