Government to relook policies regarding the elderly

It is costing government approximately 25 thousand dollars per month to care for senior citizens in geriatric hospitals and some at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

But, given their contribution to the island’s development, Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Cynthia Forde says it is a cost that will be paid.

She says this and other issues related to the elderly will be discussed when the Ministry, in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization and the University of the West Indies, hosts a virtual discussion on Friday.

Minister Forde says stakeholders have been forced to re-look the policies put in place more than a decade ago to see what improvements are needed with the aim of developing a new framework to deal with the elderly population in Barbados.
