CMC – Trinidad and Tobago Tuesday signed a multi-million dollar loan with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to enhance the efficiency and quality of the country’s water supply system.

Planning and Development Minister Pennelope Beckles signed the agreement with the IDB President Ilan Goldfajn for a US$80 million loan to upgrade water services in the country, reaffirming the IDB’s commitment to support high-quality and resilient infrastructure in the twin-island republic.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley witnessed the signing agreement for the loan, whose specific objectives are to improve the quality of water services for underserved communities in the country as well as develop capacity and provide institutional strengthening to the Ministry of Public Utilities and the Water and Sewerage Authority.

The Trinidad and Tobago National Water Sector Transformation Programme will support the government’s ongoing transformation of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to improve governance and sustainable management of water resources by developing capacity and providing institutional strengthening to the Ministry of Public Utilities, WASA and the Water Resources Agency.

It is expected that an estimated 1,025,000 people in targeted underserved communities will benefit from the new infrastructure to be built under the programme, with an additional 16,841 commercial, charitable institutions, agricultural and industrial customers also gaining access to improved water supply service.
