In the US, health officials are closely monitoring a new COVID-19 variant.
In keeping with the World Health Organisation’s custom of naming the most important COVID-19 variants, it has been called ‘Mu” after the 12th letter of the Greek alphabet.
When asked about the new variant, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci said while he doesn’t want to downplay the risk, he doesn’t think it’s an immediate threat.
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the Delta variant now accounts for 99% of the COVID-19 cases diagnosed in the US.
