January 17, 2023

CBC News has received new details of an action plan to address long waits and other issues plaguing the Accident and Emergency Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Health and Wellness Minister, Senator Dr. The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott has provided an overview of the plan.

He spoke to our Shane Sealy on the sidelines of an international high level technical meeting on non communicable diseases and mental health in small island developing states, being hosted by the Pan American Health Organisation at the Hilton Barbados.

Minister Walcott revealed he personally made an unannounced visit to A&E recently, to see the process and operation in its entirety.

He says a number of areas of concern have been identified for urgent attention.

Chief among them, the number of patients listed as elderly for care, who he explains are occupying a large number of beds in A&E.

The Health Minister says upgrades will continue soon to improve the operations in the department.

Dr. Walcott reveals there will be an increase in the number of beds for patients among other things.

Meanwhile a team out of the US is on the ground here in Barbados working with the Ministry of Health and the QEH, reviewing the operations of Accident and Emergency.
