Barbadians urged to take care of hearing

March 3, 2023

A local audiologist is using the occasion of World Hearing Day today to ask Barbadians not to take the sense of hearing for granted.

Dr. Mariella Stabler of the Barbados Speech and Hearing Centre has cautioned against the dangers of excess noise, the wearing of ear phones for long hours and pushing items, including cotton swabs or hair pins in the ear canal.

She is encouraging Barbadians when they turn 50 to consider getting a hearing test.

Dr. Stabler was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.

World Hearing Day is being commemorated under the theme “Ear and Hearing Care for All: Let’s Make It a Reality”.

Founder and Chairman of the Deaf Heart Project, Che Greenidge says Barbadians need not feel embarrassed if experiencing hearing loss.

Barbados meanwhile is set to host its first World Hearing Day event, sanctioned by the World Health Organisation and set for March 11 at Solidarity House.
