Barbados becomes a Republic

November 30th, 2021

Barbados is now a Republic, replacing the British monarch as its head of state and severing its last remaining colonial bonds.

Queen Elizabeth II was officially removed as Barbados’ head of state and became a Republic in an overnight ceremony.

The new Republic was born to the cheers of hundreds of people around Heroes’ Square, coinciding with the country’s 55th Anniversary of Independence.

After a dazzling display of Barbadian dance and music, complete with speeches celebrating the end of colonialism, Her Excellency the Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as Barbados’ first President.
