August 9th, 2021

As Barbados continues to develop its fledgling medicinal cannabis industry, the sector is attracting more interest. In fact, the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority has received more than 70 applications to date. This update from the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight. She was speaking during a recent Barbados Labour Party community meeting in the constituency of Christ Church East Central.

Dr. Munro-Knight says the hope is that medicinal cannabis licenses will be granted before year-end, at which point she expects to see a surge in applications. She has also revealed that a prescription from a doctor will be required to access medicinal cannabis in Barbados.

Dr. Munro-Knight says the legislation has made provision for minors who have cancer, epilepsy and other ailments which medicinal cannabis treats. Once prescribed by a doctor, an adult caregiver can access it on their behalf.
