BCCI welcomes planned Port upgrades

February 21, 2023

Barbadians can expect reduced shipping costs and times with the promised billion dollar upgrades at the Bridgetown Port to take place over the next ten years.

This is according to President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anthony Branker.

Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Port Incorporated David Jean-Marie announced the plans during the Estimates Debate yesterday.

Mr. Branker told CBC News the Chamber is awaiting more details on the upgrades, however he remains optimistic.

An additional berth, he says, will alleviate the issues associated with “no-cargo” days at the Port, which occur due to a large number of cruise ships, which take priority over cargo ships.

He spoke about the Port’s plans for the construction of a central cargo examination facility.

Mr. Branker says the Chamber stands ready to work with the Port, to maximize the potential benefits for the private sector and consumers.

He believes the savings of the private sector, as a result of these upgrades, will be passed on to the consumer.
