Bridgetown Initiative a useful tool in achieving SDG 6

March 24, 2023

Barbados has told a high level United Nations meeting on water – the first of its kind in over 50 years – an instrument like the Bridgetown Initiative can assist countries as they work towards attaining Sustainable Development Goal 6.

That goal speaks to ensuring access to water and sanitation for all.

The Bridgetown Initiative, piloted by Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley aims to overcome some of the main shortcomings of mobilising climate finance for small island developing states.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Water Resources, Santia Bradshaw says the Bridgetown Initiative establishes a solid framework which can chart a successful path forward.

Ms. Bradshaw thanked the Netherlands and Tajikistan for taking the charge in convening the meeting.

She says Barbados is facing a situation where the frequent occurrences of droughts and other climate crises are impacting its water supply.

Ms. Bradshaw adds the projected climate change impacts of reduced rainfall, rising sea levels, droughts and increasing temperatures are seen as major threats to Barbados’ wellbeing.
