Cruise terminal transitioning to BPI

December 11th, 2021

Effective January 1st, 2022 the cruise terminal located at the Port of Bridgetown will be under new management.

Currently, the cruise terminal is managed and operated under a lease arrangement with Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc. (BCTI).

However, following discussions between Barbados Port Inc. (BPI) and BCTI, a decision has been made by the Board of Directors of BCTI not to seek a further extension to the lease arrangement beyond December 31st, 2021.

With this decision, the cruise terminal will transition to BPI with effect from January 1st.

Since 1994, BCTI has operated the cruise terminal under a lease agreed to with BPI— formerly Barbados Port Authority – with the lease having been renewed on a number of occasions between 1994 to present.

The current lease governing the relationship has been in effect from January 1st, 2019, with an expiration date of December 31st, 2021.

In a release, the BPI says to ensure a seamless transfer, given that this takes place during the peak cruise season, management of both entities are working closely in coordinating matters that will need to be addressed. These include ongoing maintenance, staffing requirements, review of existing contracts, tenant and lease arrangements, and management oversight.

The BPI has extended thanks and appreciation to the Board of Directors, management and staff of BCTI who it says worked over the past 27 years in helping to create an enviable destination experience for cruise guests as well as revenue gains for Barbadians.

It says it will continue to focus on development of the cruise sector to ensure that the guest experience is unmatched and that the social and economic benefit of cruise to Barbados continues to expand.
