Government is working to ensure the deaf and hard of hearing are included and able to communicate easily in all aspects of Barbados’ society.
On Friday the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs launched its Deaf Empowerment Programme.
Elder Affairs Minister Kirk Humphrey says its a multifaceted venture that consolidates the programmes offered by the National Disabilities Unit.
It includes sign language training, interpreting services, guidance, and counselling along with employment training and placement.
There’s also a communication support service that will see five on-call interpreters hired to ensure the deaf and hard of hearing can communicate seamlessly when accessing critical services.
