Diet, exercise can tackle diabetes

November 14, 2022

An internationally acclaimed diabetes educator and advocate now in Barbados, says he is living proof that attention to diet and exercise can eliminate the need for diabetes medication.

Tony Kelly will be delivering the Diabetes and Hypertension Association of Barbados’ 2022 John Grace Memorial Lecture as part of World Diabetes Day activities today.

Speaking on CBC’s Mornin’ Barbados ahead of the lecture, he says he was first diagnosed with diabetes 19 years ago, but because of his strict diet and active lifestyle, he has not had to take any diabetes-related medication since his diagnosis.

He adds that he was born in Britain but grew up in Jamaica and it was there that he started to encounter some self-imposed myths related to diabetes that his family members and others had adopted.

The lecture takes place on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre under the World Diabetes Day theme: Diabetes – Education to Protect Tomorrow.
