Education Ministry exploring healthier food and beverage options

November 4th, 2021

As Barbadian students continue to learn online, the Education Ministry is exploring ways to improve the food choices available in the island’s schools, ahead of the return of face to face classes.

1 in 3 Caribbean children is currently overweight or obese, and according to Education Minister Santia Bradshaw, the pandemic has presented an opportunity for officials to accelerate the National Nutrition Policy.

The Minister made the remarks during a virtual forum led by the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition.

The discussion focused on banning the marketing and sale of unhealthy foods and beverages in schools.

Youth Coordinator and Project Assistant of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Christopher Laurie, revealed the rate of childhood obesity in the Caribbean has doubled over the last decade.

He says this is mainly due to excessive sugar consumption and sedentary lifestyles.
