Educator pens book on contributions of vestry system

December 16, 2022

Educator, Dr. Dan Carter has penned a new book chronicling the contributions of the vestry system to education in Barbados.

The book, titled ‘The Role of the Vestry System in the Early Development of Education in Barbados’ was launched by the author at Golden Sands Hotel in Christ Church.

Dr. Carter says the vestry system constituted the first form of local Government in Barbados around 1629.

He says the strong links between education and the Church were evident then, when it was made mandatory in 1680 for the rector to be chairman of the vestry.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams cautioned the country stands to lose a lot of what made Barbados, due to a lack of knowledge.

He says he is impressed by Dr. Carter’s work.
