Efforts on to increase black belly sheep production

August 17th, 2022

Local farmers are to make a concerted effort to increase the number of black belly sheep on island.

President of the Barbados Sheep Farmers Incorporated, Maurice Grant, made the revelation during a press conference at the Barbados Agricultural Society headquarters earlier today.

According to Mr. Grant, a survey done by a consultant with the Ministry of Agriculture last year found there were approximately 11,000 black belly sheep in Barbados.

He however admits it’s not a very profitable animal for a farmer to rear, because aside from the hind legs, there is not a lot of meat on the sheep.

That’s why he’s suggesting it should be crossed with a larger animal.
