Fire and rain in the City made for a toxic and uncomfortable mix for many Barbadians this morning.
A passerby alerted staff at the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) that smoke was billowing from an adjacent building on Jemmotts Lane which contained asbestos.
The smoke forced the evacuation of people from nearby buildings and businesses.
According to reports, the Fire Service arrived around twenty to eleven and started to out the flames which were contained in a section of the deserted block.
Of major concern to the fire officers is the frequency of fires at abandoned buildings.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the BFPA Anderson Langdon shares the concerns of Station Officer Bourne regarding fires at abandoned structures.
Mr. Langdon says given the number of occurrences they have been in discussion with the relevant ministries and are in the process of looking to relocate, but they need funding to complete the process.
