Today marks the first National Day in Remembrance of Jackie Opel, renowned Barbadian Spouge singer and musical icon on the 51st anniversary of his death.
Minister in the Prime Minster’s Office with Responsibility for Culture John King says it is a very special occasion both culturally and historically for Barbados.
He says the Government is cognizant of the need to honour iconic Barbadian artists as part of its mandate to preserve Barbados’ heritage in its many forms and so last year agreed to the designation of August 27 as the National Day in Remembrance of Jackie Opel.
These celebrations seek to acknowledge and reward Barbadian cultural icons who have contributed to the development of Barbados’ cultural landscape, instil a sense of national pride, celebrate their achievements, and encourage younger Barbadians to strive for excellence.
