Former M.P. Callender passes

Former Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Wendell Callender has died.

His family confirmed that he passed away on Sunday morning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. 

He represented the Barbados Labour Party when he entered the House of Assembly in 1994 as MP for Christ Church East, before he crossed the floor to join the opposition Democratic Labour Party in 1997.

Mr. Callender graduated from the University of the West  Indies with a Bachelor of Arts General Degree in Economics, History, Politics and Sociology, and also held tertiary qualifications in Education and Public Administration.

He worked as Executive Director of the Barbados Manufacturers Association, Marketing Officer of Barbados Tourism Authority, and Supervisor (Administration) Central Bank of Barbados.

He was Deputy Principal of Cooperative High School and Principal of Caribbean Training Institute, a former President of the Barbados National Council of Parent-Teachers Association and the Guild of Graduates of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and served as General-Secretary of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce.

Mr. Callender was also an author and newspaper columnist, and was known as a songwriter, performer, management trainer and community practitioner. 

His books include Event Planning & Promotion; Prime Ministers of Barbados; Tools For Life; Lyrical Rendezvous; Politics; and Heights & Valleys. (SNR)
