Help for day nursery

January 24, 2023

There remains a long waiting list for entry into government nurseries as demand for spaces continues to grow.

Part of the reason, according to Child Care Board officials, is affordability.

Parents are still paying just $20.00 per week for the toddlers at this level, which is significantly cheaper than the average day nursery, with many of them already opting to raise fees.

It is a blessing for the parents of children lucky enough to get past the waiting list and into facilities like Joan Arundell Nursery in St. Michael.

But for the nursery itself, it is a challenge to acquire all the necessary educational equipment, among other things.

Pre-school Educator at the Child Care Board, Gail Carter tells CBC News about the demand on both sides of the coin and the response.

Ms. Carter gave her take on the situation as Worrell Travel Tours donated an android flat screen television to the Joan Arundell Nursery recently.

It will be used as an education tool in the pre-school curriculum.

Operations Manager, Shauna Clifton explains why it was important for the company to give back.

In thanking Worrell Travel Tours, Supervisor, Angela Helis revealed that over time the nursery has come to depend on donations like these to help with its educational programme.

And she highlighted some of the other needs at this time.
