Latin America and Caribbean urged to work together

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is leading Barbados’ delegation in Argentina for the historic meeting of Latin American and Caribbean leaders.

The 7th Leaders’ Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) opened with host President Alberto Fernández calling for unity and respect and on countries in CELAC to work together.

Several Caribbean heads are also in attendance, including the Prime Minister of the Bahamas and Chairman of CARICOM, Philip Davis.

Speaking through an interpreter, President Fernández highlighted the challenges of countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

He says during a meeting with the Barbadian leader on a visit to Barbados, he was given further insight into the plights of islands of the Caribbean.

CELAC leaders are expected to deliberate on a range of issues including the fight against the extreme right in the face of weakening democratic processes in different countries, the US blockade of the countries of the region and the need for economic independence among others.
