Local healthcare system boosted by arrival of Cuban medical team

June 8th, 2022

Barbados’ healthcare system has once again been bolstered by the arrival of dozens of medical professionals from Cuba.

The 70 specialist doctors, nurses and lab technicians touched down at the Grantley Adams International Airport shortly after three on Tuesday, where they were greeted by local and Cuban officials.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Sonia Browne, says the local healthcare system is in need of specialised personnel, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She says Barbados is therefore eternally grateful to the Cuban government.

The last medical contingent, made up of 126 members, departed the island last week.

Cuban Ambassador, Sergio Pastrana, says the number of personnel and the types of specialties on loan, will differ depending on Barbados’ need at the time.

As the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, Ambassador Pastrana says they’re exploring cooperation in areas other than health and sports.
