Minister outlines what to expect in Estimates debate

February 19, 2023

Several million dollars are earmarked for Government to further develop its Youth Advanced Corp programme.

This is according to the Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Ryan Straughn, who has been telling Barbadians what to expect ahead of the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure debate, which starts tomorrow.

Mr. Straughn says the government is focused on driving growth in the next financial year which includes about 30 million dollars for the construction of the Geriatric Hospital and nine million dollars to improve facilities for the Youth Advanced Corp programme.

Mr. Straughn says another 30 million dollars will also be rolled out for road works while emphasis will continue to be placed on digitisation.

The Government is projecting 4.2 billion dollars in spending for the next financial year and revenue of three and a half billion. As Mr. Straughn explains, the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure is a way to allow for greater transparency in relation to Government spending and will involve members of Parliament and public servants reporting to Parliament and the public. According to him, it is not the Budget in the way people know it. That he says will come after, in a presentation by the Prime Minister.
