The Ministry of the Public Service is to meet with the National Union of Public Workers next Wednesday to discuss the adjustment to the “session” worked by watchmen in the public sector.

Director General, Human Resources, Gail Atkins, says the two sides have agreed to the meeting.

However, she stressed the Ministry has not altered the rate of pay for watchmen. She explains they would now work an 8-hour session, instead of a 12-hour one.

The intent, according to her, is to provide them with better working conditions and to align with other policies that seek to enhance the quality of work-life balance.

Ministries and departments have been advised if a watchman is required to be on duty in excess of the eight hours from the start of his/her session, he/she should receive overtime proportionate to his/her rate of pay.
