We’re getting new information indicating the monkeypox virus, which has spread to nearly 60 countries across the globe, is mutating – and at a faster rate than expected.
The Centre for Biosecurity Studies at the UWI Cave Hill Campus has been monitoring the trends and examining the most recent data.
Speaking about the level of mutation, Director Dr. Kirk Douglas, is advocating for a rapid testing mandate to be introduced to counter any potential spread and break the chains of transmission.
He’s been speaking exclusively with the Morning Report.
Dr. Douglas is of the view the pre-dominant spread of the virus has been seen in a specific at-risk population.
He believes the stigma associated will pose a challenge for individuals who need treatment for monkeypox.
