New awards for deserving Barbadians

October 27th, 2021

Several new awards will be bestowed on deserving Barbadians come Independence Day.

This, as the Lower House passed the Barbados National Honours and Decorations Bill.

Attorney General Dale Marshall says since the passage of legislation to move the country to a Republic and election of the country’s first President, consideration has also been given to Barbados’ system of Honours.

He says some, like the Medals for Bravery will continue as there’s nothing tying them to the monarchy, but the Silver and Gold Crowns of Merit, will be replaced with a Trident of Excellence.

Mr. Marshall says the Companion Honour of Barbados will become the Order of the Republic.

Currently, only two of these are bestowed in a single year and no more than 15 people can bear the title at any given time.

That number will be increased to 50.

The Bill also makes provisions for Honours to be conferred on groups of people.

The Attorney General says people who currently have awards will continue to be granted the recognition and privileges associated with those titles.
