New mural in Queen’s Park

March 18th, 2022

The National Cultural Foundation and artist Rae Garnes have come together to further enhance the beauty of Queen’s Park.

This with a mural on the pathway to the Gazebo entitled ‘Remember Us’, which includes motifs representing the tobacco plant and cotton plant native to Barbados, both of which were early cash crops grown on the island.

The design also incorporates Adinkra symbols drawn from the Akan culture of West Africa.

In a statement, the NCF’s Chief Cultural Officer Andrea Wells noted that “the mural pays tribute to less well-known aspects of Barbadian culture, with a nod to contributions from both First Nations and West African contributions to our Caribbean civilisation”.

The artist, Rae Garnes is a past top graduate of the NCF and Ministry of Youth’s 2002 Youth Achieving Results Visual Arts programme and skilled visual artist. He has also contributed to the National Exhibitions programme at NIFCA and Crop Over over the years.
