NPC to conduct Natural Gas Odorant Refilling Exercise on Thursday

October 12th, 2022

The National Petroleum Corporation (NPC) is advising the public that a Natural Gas Odorant Refilling Exercise will take place tomorrow, Thursday, October 13th.

The exercise at the Gas Plant in Woodbourne, St. Philip is scheduled to start from 9:30 a.m.

It is scheduled to last for approximately three to five hours, and those downwind of the Gas Plant may experience a smell of gas during the routine exercise.

The NPC says there is no cause for alarm as the smell may simply be due to small amounts of residual odorant evaporating into the air.

However, if the smell lingers beyond five hours, that is, after 2:30 p.m., please call the NPC at 430-4000 with your concerns.

The areas which may be affected by the smell include Hannay’s Plantation, EZ Pave, Lower Greys Plantation House and surrounding districts.

NPC routinely carries out a Natural Gas Odorant Exercise as part of its standard operations.  As natural gas is colourless and odourless, it is impossible to detect without equipment. As a result, gas companies globally inject an odorant into the gas to give it its distinctive smell as part of their safety procedures. This allows the public to detect the smell in the event of leaks.

The NPC has thanked the public for its cooperation in this matter.
