NUPW/Ministry of Public Service meeting called off

September 8th, 2021

The meeting between the National Union of Public Workers and the Ministry of Public Service scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon did not come off.

It had been set up to discuss the adjustment to the “session” worked by watchmen in the public sector, after some complained their 12 hour work period was being reduced, thereby affecting their gross pay.

Acting General Secretary of the NUPW, Wayne Walrond tells CBC News the meeting was called off after the Ministry sent correspondence dated yesterday, clarifying their position on the matter.

He says the Union considers the matter successfully resolved.

Mr. Walrond explains the issue of capping the watchmen’s pay arose as some Heads of Department misinterpreted a circular from the Public Service Ministry about increasing their hourly rate in accordance with the established national minimum wage.
