Officials exploring ways to form linkages between local medicinal cannabis and tourism industries

November 3rd, 2021

Officials in the local medicinal cannabis industry are exploring several ways to form linkages with the tourism sector.

Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Licensing Authority, Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, made the revelation during a webinar hosted along with Invest Barbados, for investors.

Under the Barbados Medicinal Cannabis Act, applicants granted a retail distributor license can operate a therapeutic or spa-like facility to dispense medicinal cannabis to patients.

Dr. Munro-Knight says this license in particular, provides an exciting opportunity for linkages between the health and tourism sectors.

Dr. Munro-Knight told investors mainly from the US and Canadian markets, authorities are also exploring the possibility of offering a day pass for travellers and cruise ship passengers to visit the therapeutic facilities and enjoy the spa services.

Responding to a question about whether a therapeutic facility could be located on a hotel property, Global Services Manager with Dentons, Robert Simmons, set out what conditions would need to be met.

Since January, the Authority has received 78 applications, across all eight license regimes.

Some are on hold pending the provision of documents, some have been pre-approved and are moving through the system, and others are awaiting or undergoing inspection of their facilities.
