Barbados and other countries in the region in the run-up to World Hypertension Day have been urged to intensify efforts to improve the management of hypertension, a measure the Pan American Health Organisation says could save around hundreds of thousands of lives in the Americas each year.
PAHO’s Director of Non-communicable Diseases and Mental Health Dr. Anselm Hennis says rates for hypertension in Latin America and the Caribbean are higher than the regional average.
The Caribbean has a 23% rate of hypertension compared to 17.6% overall.
Dr. Hennis says people of the Caribbean need to eat better and have less processed products.
PAHO on World Hypertension Day on May 17 will be focusing on preventive measures.
